Greenland is to be the newest US and NATO drone and missile launcher against Russia.
According to the preamble of the agreement with Denmark and the Prime Minister of Greenland, signed by President Donald Trump on Tuesday (September 22), Russia is now an outsider in the Arctic region ruled by the US and NATO — an “adversary” whose existence on land, sea, and air is a “strategic” threat and “security challenge”.
This Russian adversary in the region, but not of the region, is to be neutralized and counter-attacked by “planning, presence, exercises, and joint intelligence gathering.”
“Recognizing,” the treaty text declares, “the irreplaceable role the United States military plays in the defense of the territory of Greenland now and in the future…[and] recognizing the security challenges in the Arctic and the High North posed by adversaries’ increased military activity and growing strategic interest in the region…[and] Recognizing the Parties’ shared interest in allowing the United States to have military access to the territory of Greenland to the extent necessary to defend the North Atlantic Treaty area, Greenland, and the American continent, including through establishment of a Golden Dome defense system,” Trump will now expand the US space war-fighting base on Greenland, build at least two new military bases, and establish an unlimited number of “unmanned military installations”.
In addition, the US will take control over all land, sea, and air movement on and around the island; regulate and direct all building construction, mining and economic activities; and run special CIA and military force operations “to counter espionage in Greenland.” US personnel will be under US law, not local law, and by incorporating the 1951 US-Denmark pact, “nothing in this Agreement is to be interpreted as affecting command relationships.”
This means direct US military rule of Greenland as a Russia war-fighting platform to a far greater degree than has been possible for the US and the NATO allies to achieve to date in the Ukraine.
Russia as the lead adversary, but also China and other non-NATO states, are to be barred from a “persistent presence”, not only of military forces but of investment in “Particularly Sensitive Sectors or Activities in the territory of Greenland (including the Territorial Waters).” Greenland’s dominant export is fish and crustaceans; China is the island economy’s most valuable destination for exports and source of imports. Russia-bound fish exports were stopped on orders from the Danish government in 2022, after the Special Military Operation. Tourism is Greenland’s second largest revenue earner; that is now likely to be overtaken by American military spending on new construction, maintenance of existing facilities, and personnel.
If the Greenlanders object, resist, and vote themselves to be an independent state, they won’t escape the US empire.
“In case Greenland exercises its right to self-determination to become independent, the Government of the Kingdom of Denmark and the Government of Greenland shall together ensure that the independent Greenlandic state will (i) agree to remain in NATO, including by applying to become a member if necessary, and (ii) affirmatively assume, as from the date of independence, all of the rights and obligations of the Kingdom of Denmark specified in this Agreement, including any implementation agreements or arrangements between the Parties, as well as the Defense Arrangements.”
This is how the Trump White House is advancing against the Kremlin despite Trump claiming himself that on the Ukraine war front, he is set to negotiate a “deal.” In a press conference with Vladimir Zelensky on Tuesday, he claimed: “I think they’re going to make a deal and I don’t want to say what the deal is. We talk about it a lot, including with President Putin, and I think something’s going to happen.”

Would an escalation of Russian drone and missile attacks on NATO targets outside the Ukraine contribute to the root-cause and long-term security objectives of the Special Military Operation?
Unlikely is the answer: the Polish example is spelled out of how the remilitarization of the economy, the establishment of new US force bases, fabrication of Russian invasion threats, and ingratiation of Trump are serving the political ambition of Radosław Sikorski – currently the foreign minister and most popular candidate for the prime ministry — to become the head of government at the Polish elections next year. With comparable domestic political dynamics illustrated in Germany, France, and the UK, it is a mistake to predict that direct Russian escalation on targets in those countries would deter their governments, military industrial complexes, political parties, and voters from the present course.
