Salting the earth, ploughing a toxic chemical into farmland so that no food can be harvested again, was the invention of Abimelech, one of the tribal leaders of the Jewish people after they had invaded Caanan to create the Israelite kingdom, and after the Israelite tribes had begun fighting among themselves.
Abimelech’s salting of Shechem is about three thousand years old. The Israeli use of depleted uranium ordnance supplied by the US, which invented depleted uranium as a “terrain-denial” weapon in 1943, is right now. The objective is the same as the Book of Judges 9:45 tells the story – genocide by making the land occupied by the Palestinians uninhabitable for the future.
Listen to Gorilla Radio tell the story of what the Israeli-US war aim is – and where it comes from in Jewish history.
The history of poisoning the land as a war aim and a religious curse by the believers against their enemies can be followed here.
The history of inter-tribal warfare among the Jews of the Old Testament time is the story of how the Jewish people managed to displace the resident tribes – Caananites, Moabites, Midianites, Amelekites, and Philistines – and established what they then proceeded to call their kingdom, and now call their state. Retold from the point of this successful land-grab, legitimised by what is claimed to be God’s judgement in Israel’s favour, this is no more than the conventional politics of force, fraud and propaganda.
For a brush-up on the ancient and current identity of Jewish religious belief, Zionist ideology, and the basic law and war aims of the Israeli state, read Chapters 3 and 4 of the new book. In this history, there is nothing exceptional (nor exceptionally criminal) about Benjamin Netanyahu, the current Prime Minister of Israel. His predecessors and precedents are as old as the Old Testament, the Torah, the Talmud, and the Midrash.
In the King James Bible translation, this is what happened when one ambitious Jewish tribal chief tried liquidating his challengers and stealing their fields, orchards, forts, and towns. “The next day the people went out to the fields. This was reported to Abimelech. He took his troops, divided them into three companies, and placed them in ambush in the fields. When he saw that the people were well out in the open, he sprang up and attacked them. Abimelech and the company with him charged ahead and took control of the entrance to the city gate; the other two companies chased down those who were in the open fields and killed them. Abimelech fought at the city all that day. He captured the city and massacred everyone in it. He leveled the city to the ground, then sowed it with salt. And when all the men of the tower of Shechem heard that, they entered into an hold of the house of the god Berith. And it was told Abimelech, that all the men of the tower of Shechem were gathered together. And Abimelech gat him up to mount Zalmon, he and all the people that were with him; and Abimelech took an axe in his hand, and cut down a bough from the trees, and took it, and laid it on his shoulder, and said unto the people that were with him, What ye have seen me do, make haste, and do as I have done.”
Abimelech’s war was a dynastic one; he wanted to be the first king of Israel; he managed to succeed by bribery and murder. His kingship lasted for three years; then, by the time God had reviewed the options for the Chosen People, it was decided to drop a millstone on Abimelech’s head. The rest of the story can be followed here.
The stone has yet to drop on Netanyahu’s head. If he is to repeat the biblical Book of Judges, he has three years to go. That’s long war, and strategic defeat for Israel and its allies. Meantime, before God is obliged to review his options, listen to today’s discussion with Chris Cook on Gorilla Radio, starting at Minute 28.
